Ideas and Open Inquiry

The Heller School for Social Policy and Management at Brandeis University, ranked by US News and World Report as one of the top three graduate schools of social policy in the United States, is dedicated to using knowledge to advance social justice.

The knowledge generated at the Heller School is used in efforts to reduce persistent poverty, vulnerability, and inequality. A Heller School education will serve to inform and clarify your ideas as you seek to engage in change.

Interdisciplinary and innovative, the Heller MPP program will help you analyze and develop policy solutions to some of the most difficult social problems. You will work closely with faculty who are scholars and leaders in their fields. In addition to learning economics, political science, and organizational theory, you will hone your expertise through research, writing, and analysis before choosing a public policy concentration in one of the following areas:

  • Health
  • Behavioral Health
  • Children, Youth, and Families
  • Poverty Alleviation and Development
  • Aging
  • General Social Policy

Rigorous and Unbiased Analysis

A new generation of trained social policy experts is needed to design social policies, to craft effective policy, to study finance mechanisms, and to use social science techniques to evaluate the effectiveness, fairness, and impact of public policy. This is especially challenging in an era of limited resources and enormous competition. Heller’s high standards for rigorous and unbiased analysis will be important assets to students contemplating careers in government, advocacy, policy research, policy implementation, the private sector, and community work.

Heller’s MPP provides students with the skills necessary to design, implement, reform, analyze, and bring to scale innovative solutions to society’s most critical problems.
