Framework & Action Plan

We have developed a broad framework for how to think about improving environmental impacts and raising awareness of environmental issues at both the Heller and University levels. Within each level, possible actions are categorized according to the following list.  Note that some actions will overlap domains, and also that the environmental impacts of actions in each area may occur both here and far afield; for instance, reducing use of toxic cleaning supplies (or pesticides/herbicides for grounds maintenance) will remove hazards here and will also contribute to lowering production of these chemicals, and reducing the amount eventually released into the environment after use.

1.  Communication/Education/Awareness (e.g., provide environmental tips and information, elicit suggestions)

2.  Resource Use

  • Paper
    - Reduce (e.g., make double-sided copies)
    - Reuse (e.g., use paper clean on one side as scrap paper)
    - Recycle (e.g., increase recycling of used paper, purchase recycled paper)
    - Minimize other harm (e.g., buy chlorine-free paper)

  • Energy (e.g., conserve electricity)

  • Other Resources (e.g. increase plastics recycling, water conservation)

 3. Products and Practices for a Healthier Heller Environment (e.g., switch to non-toxic cleaning supplies, reduce noise pollution)

We also include in the above framework more environment-friendly renovation and construction at Heller. Our input on sustainable design features was included in the New Building Workgroup's Sustainable Design committee memo.
