Modernization, quality of life, and the welfare of indigenous people
Principal Investigator: Prof. Ricardo Godoy

This series of studies contains the principal papers that have come out of multidisciplinary research on the effects of markets and modernization on the use of natural resources and the quality of life of lowland Amerindian populations in Bolivia. A fuller description of the past research and research in progress is under development.

Markets, economic development, and quality of life among Tsimane’ Amerindians, lowland Bolivia

The broad aim of the program is to examine and help train young scholars in rigorous methods for both collecting information from the field and for using the information to analyze the effects of economic development – which one can equate with markets, globalization, or trade opening -- on a broad range of social, biological, and economic outcomes among rural populations. The program has three specific aims: (a) to examine the effects of economic development on the use of natural resources, society, and indicators of quality of life among Tsimane’ households, a horticultural-foraging society (pop ~7,000) in the rain forest of eastern Bolivia, (b) to help train graduate students, undergraduates, post-doctoral students, and young faculty from different disciplines to answer queries of common concern that cut across disciplinary boundaries, and (c) to identify, implement, and evaluate interventions that help increase the quality of life of rural populations.
